What a cataract screening is
A cataract screening is a short set of non-invasive checks on the lens of the eye, to work out whether clouding explains what you have noticed. At our community clinics it is optometrist-led, takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs $29 — at Bedok, Clementi and Toa Payoh — and every report is reviewed by an ophthalmologist.
Cataracts are a common cause of gradual vision changes, particularly among older adults. Our cataract screening service helps assess whether cataracts may be contributing to symptoms such as blurred vision, glare sensitivity or reduced visual clarity.
A screening is not a consultation about surgery. It establishes whether a cataract is there and how much of your vision is affected. You may also share your concerns with our friendly eye doctors to get peace of mind.

This package looks at the lens. It does not include a photograph of the retina, a visual field test or an OCT scan — the general, diabetic retinal and comprehensive screenings add those.

The age to start
How often should you have one?
A baseline comprehensive eye examination is recommended at the age of 40, even when nothing feels wrong — it is when the early signs of cataract, glaucoma and diabetic changes first become detectable.

How much does a cataract screening cost in Singapore?
A cataract screening is $29 nett at our community clinics in Bedok, Clementi and Toa Payoh. That covers the whole package, including the doctor-reviewed report. A cataract screening prescription check can be added for $20.
How long does a cataract screening take?
Allow 30 to 40 minutes. There are no dilating drops in this screening, so nothing blurs your near vision afterwards.
How is a cataract diagnosed?
Mainly by looking at the lens directly. The slit lamp gives a magnified view of the front of the eye, where a cataract can be seen; the vision, refraction and pressure checks alongside it show how much it is affecting you and help rule out other causes.
What happens if the screening finds a cataract?
Finding one does not mean it needs operating on. Your report says what was seen, and where it needs specialist care you are referred on to an eye specialist, who decides with you whether and when to treat it.
What is the cataract screening prescription check?
An optional $20 addition, at our Bedok, Clementi and Toa Payoh clinics, that checks your spectacle prescription at the same visit. The cataract screening on its own is about the lens, so the prescription check is what tells you whether new glasses would help in the meantime.
