What a general eye screening is
A general eye screening — an eye check-up or eye test in everyday words — is a set of non-invasive checks on how well you see and how healthy your eyes are. At our community clinics it is optometrist-led, takes 45 minutes to an hour and costs $99 — at Bedok, Clementi and Toa Payoh — and every report is reviewed by an ophthalmologist.
Many eye conditions develop gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Our general eye screening services help assess overall eye health and visual function through a series of non-invasive examinations.
It is a check of the eye rather than of one condition. If what brought you here is cloudy vision, glare or difficulty at night, the cataract screening is aimed at that. You may also share your concerns with our friendly eye doctors to get peace of mind.

How often should you have one?
A baseline comprehensive eye examination is recommended at the age of 40, even when nothing feels wrong — it is when the early signs of cataract, glaucoma and diabetic changes first become detectable.

How long does a general eye screening take?
Allow 45 minutes to an hour. The retinal photograph is taken without dilating drops, so nothing blurs your near vision afterwards.
What is the difference between a general and a cataract eye screening?
Both include the same five core tests. At our Bedok, Clementi and Toa Payoh clinics the cataract screening stops there and is aimed at the lens, at $29. The general screening adds a photograph of the retina, a check of your spectacle prescription, a colour vision test and a scan of the front of the eye, so it looks at overall eye health rather than one condition.
Do I get my spectacle prescription from a general eye screening?
Yes. Automated refraction and a prescription screening are both included, so the report covers your prescription. It is not a spectacle fitting, and we do not dispense glasses.
Is a general eye screening enough, or should I book the comprehensive one?
The general screening covers routine eye health and your prescription. The comprehensive screening adds the tests this one leaves out — Amsler test, Visual field testing and Posterior segment OCT — at $249 at our Bedok, Clementi and Toa Payoh clinics.
