What is myopia?
Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, is a condition where distant objects appear blurry. Myopia usually starts in childhood and changes as a child grows, so each visit records two things:
- their prescription
- the length of the eye

What is a myopia screening?
It is a set of non-invasive checks on how well your child sees and how their eyes are developing. One of our optometrists carries out the 9 tests, including a measurement of the length of the eye, and makes individualised recommendations tailored to your child’s vision and lifestyle needs.
How much does a myopia screening cost in Singapore?
A myopia screening is $95.92 nett at our community clinics in Bedok, Clementi and Toa Payoh, and $130.80 at our Camden clinic, where a follow-up myopia screening is $98.10. That covers all 9 tests and an assessment made by our senior optometrist.
What is the difference between a myopia screening and a general eye screening?
The general eye screening looks at overall eye health at a point in time. The myopia screening is built around how short-sightedness is changing, and adds three checks the other screenings do not include — a measurement of the length of the eye, an orthoptic assessment of how the two eyes work together, and a check of depth perception.
What is axial length measurement?
It is a measurement of the length of the eye, from front to back. Recording it at each visit gives an objective measure of how the eye is growing, alongside the spectacle prescription. It is one of the 9 tests in the screening.
Does the myopia screening include a glasses prescription?
Yes. Refraction — the measurement of your child’s spectacle prescription — is included as one of the nine tests, and the results will be provided. If required, prescription spectacles can also be made and purchased at our clinics. Our optometrists will assess your child’s needs and guide you through the appropriate options.
What happens if the screening finds my child is short-sighted?
Many children can be effectively monitored and managed through regular optometrist-led follow-up. However, some children may benefit from additional medical assessment or treatment. Our optometrists work closely with our doctor-led myopia services and will recommend a medical review or referral where appropriate.
