What an online eye consultation is
A teleconsultation is a video appointment with a doctor, held wherever you are. You are seen by Dr Seow Wei Hong, a Primary Eye Care Physician at The Straits Eye Community Clinic.
Our clinic is licensed by the Ministry of Health to provide teleconsultation. If your concern require a physical examination, you may be seen at one of our community clinics instead.
What a video call can and cannot do
A video consultation is not an eye test. Visual acuity, eye pressure and a dilated view of the retina all need equipment and a person in the room, so an online session is for discussing a concern and deciding what to do next. A general eye screening at our community clinics is where visual acuity and eye pressure are measured, and the retina photographed.
Some things need to be looked at in person, and some need it urgently. Do not wait for a video call if you have:
- Sudden loss of vision, or a dark curtain or shadow across your sight
- A chemical splash or burn, which needs immediate rinsing and hospital care
- An injury to the eye, or anything that has gone into it
- Severe eye pain, especially with nausea, vomiting or a headache
- Flashes, or a sudden shower of new floaters
- Pain or sudden worsening of vision after recent eye surgery
If any of those describe you, seek urgent in-person medical attention rather than booking a session. For anything else, message us and we will tell you whether a video call is the right place to start.

How does an online eye consultation work?
Message us with your concern. We confirm whether a teleconsultation with Dr Seow Wei Hong is suitable and arrange the session, and he goes through your symptoms, looks at your eyes on camera where that helps, and tells you what to do next.
Which eye problems can be dealt with online?
Everyday concerns, where a conversation and a look are enough to decide what happens next — a red, itchy or watering eye, a stye or a swollen lid, discharge or crusting, dry and gritty eyes, eye strain, and questions about drops you are already on. Anything needing vision, eye pressure or the retina measured is seen at a clinic.
Can conjunctivitis or pink eye be assessed online?
Often, yes. A red, watering eye is one of the commonest reasons people book a session, and much of what Dr Seow Wei Hong needs is either visible on camera or in what you tell him. Where the eye has to be examined directly, he will say so.
Can I see a doctor online for a stye?
Yes. A lump or swelling on the eyelid is usually visible on video, so it is a reasonable thing to start with online. A lid that needs to be examined or treated in person is seen at one of our community clinics.
Can dry eye symptoms be assessed online?
The symptoms can be discussed — the grittiness, the burning, and vision that blurs and clears when you blink — along with anything you have already tried. The tests that measure a dry eye need a clinic visit.
Are online eye exams accurate?
A video consultation is not an eye examination. Vision, eye pressure and the retina cannot be measured over a call, so an online session is for discussing a concern and deciding what to do next — not for testing your eyes.
What do I need for the video call?
Good lighting on your face, a quiet place where you can talk privately, a stable internet connection, and your physical IC for identity verification. Be ready to share your location. Patients under 18 attend with a parent, guardian or next of kin.

Is teleconsultation legal in Singapore?
