What an online eye consultation is

A teleconsultation is a video appointment with a doctor, held wherever you are. You are seen by Dr Seow Wei Hong, a Primary Eye Care Physician at The Straits Eye Community Clinic.

Our clinic is licensed by the Ministry of Health to provide teleconsultation. If your concern require a physical examination, you may be seen at one of our community clinics instead.

What a video call can and cannot do

A video consultation is not an eye test. Visual acuity, eye pressure and a dilated view of the retina all need equipment and a person in the room, so an online session is for discussing a concern and deciding what to do next.

Some things should be seen in person rather than booked online:

  • Sudden loss or change of vision
  • An injury to the eye, or anything that has gone into it
  • An eye that is red and painful, rather than red and irritable
  • Flashes, a shower of new floaters, or a shadow across your sight

If any of those describe you, message us anyway and we will get you seen — at one of our clinics, or onward to an eye specialist.

What people use an online session for

Everyday eye concerns, where a conversation and a look are enough to decide what happens next. Message us and we will confirm whether yours is one of them.

If a video session is not the right thing — or it turns out something needs to be measured, dilated or looked at properly — you are seen at one of the three community clinics below, by the same practice.

If necessary, you may be referred to our team of experienced and compassionate eye specialists too.

Common questions

Is teleconsultation legal in Singapore?

Yes. The Straits Eye Community Clinic is licensed by the Ministry of Health to provide teleconsultation, and sessions are held by a registered doctor.

How does an online eye consultation work?

Message us with your concern. We confirm whether a teleconsultation with Dr Seow Wei Hong is suitable, and arrange the session if it is.

How much is an online consultation?

$29 nett for a teleconsultation with Dr Seow Wei Hong, a Primary Eye Care Physician at The Straits Eye Community Clinic.

Are online eye exams accurate?

A video consultation is not an eye examination. Vision, eye pressure and the retina cannot be measured over a call, so an online session is for discussing a concern and deciding what to do next — not for testing your eyes.

What if I need to be seen in person?

We will say so, and you can be seen at our community clinics in Bedok, Clementi or Toa Payoh. Where an eye needs a surgeon, Dr Seow Wei Hong refers on.
