What gonioscopy is
Gonioscopy is a look at the drainage angle, the corner inside the eye where the iris meets the cornea.
Fluid is made inside the eye all the time and leaves through this corner, which keeps the pressure steady. The corner cannot be seen looking straight in, so a lens with mirrors shows it from the side.

How gonioscopy is done
A few minutes, at the slit lamp.
- Contact lenses come out first.
- A numbing drop goes in each eye.
- You rest your chin at the slit lamp, the same microscope used for the rest of the examination.
- A small mirrored lens is rested on the eye, with a little gel, while a light shines in. It may be pressed gently to see the angle better.
You may feel the lens resting on the eye, but it is not painful.
What gonioscopy shows
How open the drainage angle is.
- An open angle leaves room for fluid to drain.
- A narrow angle is one where the iris sits close to the drainage corner, leaving less room.
- A closed angle is one where part of the iris blocks the corner. When fluid cannot leave, the pressure inside the eye can rise, which is angle-closure glaucoma.
- The corner itself, for pigment or scarring.

After gonioscopy
The numbness wears off on its own.
- Your vision may be a little blurred for a short while from the gel.
- Do not rub your eyes until the numbness has worn off.
- You can usually drive afterwards, unless dilating drops were used too.

- Tonometry measures the pressure inside the eye.
- Pachymetry measures the cornea’s thickness, which shifts a pressure reading.

Common questions
Does gonioscopy hurt?
No. The eye is numbed with a drop first. You may feel the lens resting on it, but it is not painful.
How long does gonioscopy take?
A few minutes, at the slit lamp. Each eye takes a minute or two.
Is gonioscopy invasive?
No. The lens rests on the surface of the eye, and nothing goes into it.
Does gonioscopy need dilating drops?
No. It is usually done before any dilating drops, because the size of the pupil changes how open the angle looks.
Why is gonioscopy done?
To see whether the drainage angle is open, narrow or closed. It is most often part of a glaucoma assessment, done alongside an eye pressure test.
What is a narrow angle?
An angle where the iris sits close to the drainage corner, leaving less room for fluid to leave the eye. Your eye doctor explains what it means for your eye and whether anything needs to be done.
Is gonioscopy the same as a slit lamp examination?
No, but it is done at the slit lamp. A slit lamp examination looks at the front of the eye straight on; gonioscopy adds a mirrored lens to see the drainage angle around the corner.
Is gonioscopy the same as tonometry?
No. Tonometry measures the pressure inside the eye; gonioscopy looks at the corner the fluid drains through. The two are often done at the same visit.
Is gonioscopy the same as an OCT scan?
No. An OCT scan of the front of the eye pictures the angle with light, without touching the eye; gonioscopy lets the doctor look at it directly through a lens. The two can be used together.
Is gonioscopy part of a routine eye check?
It is not part of our eye screening packages. It is done at an eye specialist consultation when the doctor needs to see the angle, most often as part of a glaucoma assessment.
Can I drive after gonioscopy?
Usually, yes, once any blur from the gel has cleared. If dilating drops were also used, wait until your vision is clear.
